There seems to be a growing number of patients that are unhappy hooked up to their CPAP devices for sleep apnea. The concept of being tethered to a machine by a hose and having to wear a mask seems, by its very nature, to cause one to lose sleep. Many patients feel that the machine is too noisy, cumbersome, and some patients are just embarrassed to use it.
We see professional athletes such as basketball players that wear mouth guards to protect their teeth. For sleep apnea patients, we fabricate two very similar clear plastic “guards”, one for the upper jaw and one for the lower jaw. They are designed to hook together and reposition the lower jaw forward to open breathing passages, reduce sleep apnea and reduce snoring.
The device is called a TAP appliance and the concept is that it creates an open airway in the throat to allow for comfortable breathing and a good night’s sleep. There is a small key that fits into the front of the device that we are able to turn to further reposition the lower jaw and gradually find the ideal position that will minimize their sleep apnea problems.
The TAP® Appliance works well.. Our patient’s report that they wake up more refreshed, feel healthier and more alert during the day.
For a better nights sleep, you should consider trying the Thornton Adjustable Positioner. You may just be TAPping your way to a more pleasant sleep. Your significant other may also be happy to hear a little less snoring.
