Treatment for sleep apnea and snoring

Anti-snoring device: TAP3® (Thornton Adjustable Positioner)

Anti-snoring and anti-sleep apnea mandibular advancement device, the TAP3® (Thornton Adjustable Positioner)

I have some great news for patients suffering from sleep apnea and heavy snoring…

We have a good solution!  It’s called the TAP3® Appliance. Our patients are amazed that they can sleep better at night and wake up more refreshed just from wearing some invisible clear “trays” in their mouth.

The procedure of making a custom fit TAP3 is easy. At our dental office, we take an impression of your upper and lower teeth and send them to a specialized lab in California.  The laboratory sends us back a perfectly fitting tray for your upper teeth and one for your lower teeth.   The trays are similar to what you would wear to bleach your teeth, only they are firmer and fit snugly and comfortably.

The TAP3 is an anti-snoring mandibular advancement device. When the appliance is worn, the lower jaw is repositioned forward so that the anatomical structures that cause sleep problems are realigned.  The patient gradually adjusts to the forward relationship of the lower jaw (the mandible) to the upper jaw (the maxilla).  The TAP3 prevents the tongue and the soft tissue in the back of the throat from collapsing back and blocking the airway. Since the device is patient-adjustable, patients find the device comfortable.

Each patient is given the “key” to dialing their comfort and position of their jaws.  Over time, we periodically adjust the TAP 3 to advance the lower jaw forward the proper amount. As the lower jaw comes forward, so does the tongue, which helps open up the airway to allow proper breathing during sleeping. We also provide the patient with a very informative instruction booklet. Sleep problems seem to fade away.

As always, the first step with any medical treatment  is a proper diagnosis of the problem. If you think you have sleep apnea or you are snoring heavily, you should consult with your primary care physician, who will typically guide you in the right direction to a sleep specialist for a sleep study.

Most often, it’s us guys with the snoring and apnea problems, and wives are obviously ecstatic with the results. Less snoring means a better sleep for everyone!

As always, please let me know if there are other topics that you would like for me to discuss on my blog.
