TMJ Disorder: Synonyms

TMD, TemporoMandibular Joint Disorder, TMJ Syndrome

Written by South Florida dentist Dr. Jeffrey Lissauer, serving Boynton Beach, Delray Beach and Palm Beach

Among health care professionals, numerous names are used interchangeably for TMJ Disorder:

  • TemporoMandibular Disorder, abbreviated TMD
  • TemporoMandibular Joint Disease or TMJ Disease
  • TemporoMandibular Joint Syndrome or TMJ Syndrome
  • TemporoMandibular Joint Dysfunction or TMJ Dysfunction

Sometimes, TMJ Disorder is simply called “TMJ”. Often, people suffering from TMJ Disorder will simply state, “I have TMJ.” Well, in actuality, TMJ is just the name of the joint (the TemporoMandiublar Joint). So, in essence, this is similar to a person with a hip problem saying, “I have hip.”

However, regardless of the name, TMJ Disorder can be serious. So, you should readily seek treatment if you experience any of the symptoms. Please continue to read to learn more about the symptoms commonly associated with TMD…

About my experiences helping patients with TMJ Disorder

After attending and teaching at Tufts Dental School, I moved to south Florida with my wife Joanne and have been practicing in the Delray and Boynton Beach area for over 25 years. Each year, more new patients come to my office for treatment of TMJ Disorder. The disease is certainly becoming more prevalent. Some dentists attribute this to the elevated stress levels in America, while others believe patients are just more apt to seek care. Regardless, if you experience symptoms, my strongest advise is to seek a professional opinion. If you have any questions or would like to schedule a TMJ evaluation, please feel free to contact us
