How to Floss

Flossing technique and how often to floss are keys to preventing gum disease

Written by south Florida cosmetic dental office Lissauer Dental, serving Boynton Beach, Delray Beach and Palm Beach

Flossing is extremely important to your dental health. Follow these tips and be on your way to a healthy smile:

Floss at least once per day
When you brush, the bristles cannot enter the crevice between your teeth. So, without flossing, you are missing around 30-40% of the surfaces of your teeth.

Proper flossing technique:
Use a big piece of floss (around a foot and a half) and wrap the floss around your two middle fingers. This allows your two index fingers to do all the work, and your index fingers are the most dexterous.

Glide the floss between two teeth. You should try not to snap the floss hard between your teeth. Once the floss is between the two teeth, imagine how you dry your back with a towel after a shower: wrapping the towel along the curvature of your back and moving the towel back and forth. This is the technique you should use against each tooth, moving the floss back and forth against the curvature of the tooth as if you are drying your back. Repeat this for all of your teeth.

Also, make sure you floss behind the last tooth in each quadrant (upper right, upper left, lower right, lower left). These surfaces are often missed.
