To achieve ideal oral health, brushing correctly and routinely is essential. Follow these instructions to proper brushing:
Brush at least twice per day at the correct times
Unfortunately, people brush at times that are not ideal. People wake up and immediately brush their teeth. However, the point of brushing is to remove plaque, food, and bacteria. Thus, you should wait until after breakfast to first brush. Also, you want to brush after the last thing you eat before bed. Some people brush after dinner but have a snack later in the night. Without brushing after the snack, you are going to sleep with food on your teeth.
Use toothpaste with fluoride
Almost all toothpaste sold contains fluoride, but just make sure. If your teeth are sensitive, you can choose a toothpaste (like Sensodyne) that contains fluoride and a desensitizing agent.
- Wet your toothbrush and apply a “pea size” amount of toothpaste
- Starting all the way on the front of the last tooth, angle the brush at a 45 degree angle to your gums and move up and down as you slowly move forward.
- Brush the outer part of your teeth, then the biting surface, then the inside surface
- Don’t miss any teeth or any surfaces.
- Brush your tongue
- Brush for two minutes and fifteen seconds
Divide your teeth into quadrants (upper right, upper left, lower right, lower left) and brush each quadrant for 30 seconds. Then finish by brushing your tongue for 15 seconds. Actually, a lot of the bacteria that cause bad breath are on your tongue.
