Conventional porcelain veneers

A guide to conventional porcelain teeth veneers

Written by south Florida cosmetic dentist Dr. Jeffrey Lissauer, serving Boynton Beach, Delray Beach and Palm Beach

What are Conventional Porcelain Veneers?

A conventional porcelain veneer is a thin piece of porcelain that is bonded to the front of a tooth. Porcelain is a durable, translucent, strong, natural-looking, and beautiful material. The porcelain is shaped, contoured and colored to perfectly fit your teeth and create your new smile.

In most cases, if you just bond a piece of porcelain to the front of a tooth, the thickness of the porcelain will make the tooth appear bulky. The majority of people don’t want their teeth to appear big. Thus, a cosmetic dentist will slightly shave down a very small layer of the front of your tooth (around 0.5 mm, the width of a pen tip) in order to create space for the thin piece of porcelain. This way, your teeth will be the correct dimensions, will not appear bulky, and will have a natural look. Conventional Porcelain Veneers create the most beautiful results and are thus the most common type of veneer used.

Procedure of Conventional porcelain veneers;
  • The first step of Conventional Porcelain Veneers is a comprehensive evaluation and consultation with an experienced cosmetic dentist. Together, you and your dentist will determine the ideal plan of action to improve your smile.
  • If Conventional Porcelain Veneers are the best option, only two appointments are needed from start to finish. At the first appointment, your dentist will ensure your comfort throughout the procedure by getting you numb in the area. Next, in order to prevent the veneers from looking bulky, your dentist will slightly shave down a thin layer of the front of your tooth (around .5 mm, the width of a pen tip). Then, a highly detailed mold (impression) of your mouth will be taken.
  • The impression will be sent to a professional dental laboratory. The trained laboratory technician will shape, color, shine and finish the veneers as per your cosmetic dentist’s specifications. At the end of the first appointment, temporary veneers will be made and bonded onto your teeth while the laboratory technician creates your new porcelain veneers.
  • At the second appointment, the veneers will be tried in for you to see your beautiful new smile. As long as you love them, the veneers will be bonded into place and your dentist will make sure your bite is correct.
