What are Lumineers?
Lumineers are ultra-thin, custom-made pieces of porcelain that are bonded directly onto the front of your teeth, without any tooth structure being taken away by your dentist. Lumineers can produce amazing results, but your cosmetic dentist needs to be adequately trained with plenty of experience and an artistic touch. The downside of Lumineers is essentially that your teeth will be slightly larger, since a piece of porcelain is bonded to the front without any tooth structure being removed. Thus, Lumineers should be reserved for select situations where the teeth won’t appear bulky in the end.
Procedure of Lumineers
- The first step of Lumineers is a comprehensive evaluation and consultation with your cosmetic dentist. Together, you and your dentist will determine the ideal plan of action to improve your smile.
- If Lumineers are the best option, only two appointments are needed from start to finish. At the first appointment, your dentist will take a highly detailed mold (impression) of your mouth. No injections or numbing agents are used for Lumineers. In addition, none of your teeth will be shaved down, so no drilling will be used for Lumineers.
- The impressions will be sent to a professional dental laboratory that is certified in Lumineers. The trained laboratory technician will shape, color, shine and finish the Lumineers as per your cosmetic dentist’s specifications and recommendations.
- At the second appointment, the Lumineers will be tried in for you to see your beautiful new smile. As long as you love them, the Lumineers will be bonded into place and your dentist will make sure your bite is correct.
