Are veneers for you?

Would Lumineers® or Porcelain Veneers be a good idea for your teeth?

Written by south Florida cosmetic dentist Dr. Jeffrey Lissauer, serving Boynton Beach, Delray Beach and Palm Beach

The advancements in veneers have truly revolutionized the field of dentistry. The improvements in dental materials and technology have vastly expanded the use of veneers. Veneers are now a very reliable, predictable, and beautiful answer to many dental problems, such as:

  • Teeth staining or discoloration
Coffee, soda, wine, tobacco, various foods, and even some prescription medications can cause tooth discoloration. Teeth whitening is very effective at eliminating stains. For discolorations resistant to teeth whitening, veneers may be a good option.
  • Chipped teeth
Even though enamel is the strongest substance in your body, teeth can still chip and fracture. For chipped teeth in the front of your mouth, veneers can do wonders.
  • Gaps between teeth
Permanent teeth can grow in with gaps between them, or gaps can gradually develop later in life. Depending on the situation, veneers can be used to close these spaces.
  • Rotated or crooked teeth
Teeth can grow in rotated or can rotate over time. Veneers can sometimes be placed to improve the appearance of a rotated tooth in the front of one’s mouth.
  • Uneven teeth
Teeth can be uneven for countless reasons. Veneers are an excellent option to make your teeth even lengths.
  • Short or small teeth
Teeth may appear short or small for numerous reasons: your gum tissue may be covering a portion of the teeth, you may have been born with small teeth, or you may have ground them down over years. Cosmetic dental procedures, like veneers and gum tissue remodeling, can help create the proper teeth proportions.
  • Gummy smile
For some people, excessive gum tissue may cover too much tooth structure. In this case, you may see more gum tissue and less teeth than the average person when smiling. In a procedure, your gum line can be re-shaped to create the natural proportion and contours of gum tissue and teeth. Often, veneers are combined with the re-shaping of the gum tissue to create a more aesthetic, natural result.
  • Black spaces between your teeth
Over time, your gums may recede, creating what appear to be black spaces or black triangles in between your teeth. Veneers are often used to fill in these black areas and restore your natural smile.
