A Porcelain Crown is a dental crown that is completely made of porcelain. Porcelain is an excellent material, since it is both extremely strong and aesthetic. Also, technological advances continue to improve the durability of porcelain crowns, allowing them to handle higher forces from biting.
Advantages of porcelain crowns:
Extremely aesthetic: Porcelain’s color and translucency closely matches enamel, making porcelain crowns very natural looking. Thus, porcelain crowns are typically used on front teeth because of their magnificent ability to match other natural teeth.
No grey line near the gum line: A different type of crown, called a porcelain-fused-to-metal crown, has a metal inside that can sometimes be seen near the gums. Porcelain crowns do not have this metal inside, so the risk of a grey line seen at the gums is avoided.
Disadvantages of porcelain crowns:
Porcelain can chip: Porcelain is a strong material but biting forces are extremely high. Thus, a piece of porcelain can potentially chip off from a porcelain crown. As a result, porcelain crowns are mainly used on front teeth where biting forces are lighter and rarely used on back teeth (like molars) were forces are higher.
Also, many people ask about the difference between a porcelain crown and a porcelain veneer. A porcelain crown encircles and covers the entire visible portion of the tooth above the gums, while a porcelain veneer only covers the front part of the tooth.
A little about me and my experiences with dental crowns:
After graduating from Tufts Dental School, I completed a residency at Boston City Hospital. Following the residency, I worked in a practice near Boston while teaching at my dental school for a few years. My wife Joanne and I then decided to move to south Florida, where I have practiced for the past twenty-five years. Over this time, cosmetic dentistry has become my passion, especially making beautiful dental crowns. In the office, we make sure that every crown blends absolutely perfectly with our patients’ natural teeth. If the color of a dental crown is slightly off, we add a little color and bake the crown in our porcelain oven until it is the perfect shade. Also, we want every crown to look gorgeous and last as long as possible, so we only use the highest quality porcelain. If we are making a porcelain-fused-to-metal crown, we only use high precious metal. In addition, to make every crown, we confidently believe that we use the best dental laboratory in the country.
